“…We believe that uveitis is a severe complication of the disease, not simply in terms of its functional threat (band keratopathy, glaucoma, or cataract, which are tightly linked to late discovery of uveitis), but also in terms of its chronicity and long-term treatment constraints. We found that the presence of ANA did not predispose oligoarticularonset JIA patients to chronic uveitis, in contrast to that found in previous studies (25,40), and we frequently observed ANA positivity after uveitis occurrence. These observations indicate that the relationship between ANA and uveitis is far from clear-cut; the strong association between ANA positivity and uveitis reported in previous studies (25,(39)(40)(41) is not sufficient to warrant the use of ANA positivity as a prognostic factor.…”

Our results suggest that whatever the results of ANA tests, children should be examined as frequently as every 3 months by an ophthalmologist.…”

“…2 The risk of cataract formation in JIA-associated uveitis increases when posterior synechia are present at the initial examination and with treatment with a high dose of systemic corticosteroids. 3 Previously, the visual outcome of cataract surgery in JIA-associated uveitis was poor. Since new surgical techniques have been recommended, the results of cataract extraction (CE) have improved, but surgery in uveitic eyes of children still remains challenging.…”

“…A remarkable difference in the frequency of secondary glaucoma was noted between the two groups (45% in the former and 17% in the latter). 26 Similarly, Neri et al found posterior synechiae to be present more frequently in patients with secondary glaucoma. 17 In the same study, 14.5% patients with chronic uveitis without glaucoma had a deterioration of the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA).…”
