Profound bioenergetic abnormalities in peri-infarct myocardial regions

Abstract: Regions of myocardial infarct (MI) are surrounded by a border zone (BZ) of normally perfused but dysfunctional myocardium. Although systolic dysfunction has been attributed to elevated wall stress in this region, there is evidence that intrinsic abnormalities of contractile performance exist in BZ myocardium. This study examined whether decreases of high-energy phosphates (HEP) and mitochondrial F 1F0-ATPase (mtATPase) subunits typical of failing myocardium exist in BZ myocardium of compensated postinfarct rem… Show more

“…The rate of lactate accumulation slowed after 40 min of simulated ischemia, indicating a gradual cessation of glycolysis. Interestingly, throughout the period of simulated ischemia (2,5,20,40, and 80 min), there were no significant differences between hibernating and normal myocardium in LAD or remote regions of the same heart. This suggests that anaerobic glycolysis was not altered in hibernating myocardium.…”

“…Detailed surgical preparations for MR spectroscopy (MRS) study are published previously (18,38,40). Briefly, animals were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (30 mg/kg, followed by a 4 mg·kg Ϫ1 ·h Ϫ1 iv), intubated, and ventilated with a respirator and supplemental oxygen.…”

“…We divided the myocardium into subendocardial and subepicardial half-layers by the mid-point of the myocardium at end-systole. Mean strain values in the subendocardial half-layer and in the subepicardial half-layer were calculated by averaging the strain values over each layer in the infarcted (center of segment 13), border (edge of segment 7), 18 and remote regions (center of segment 10). In this study, the "infarcted" region was assigned predominantly to territories of the LAD, and the "remote" region was assigned to the LCX or right coronary artery.…”
