Profitability of cabbage production by smallholder farmers in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Abstract: Cabbage is one of the most cultivated vegetable crops that are used as a staple crop because of its affordability and nutritional value. Improving profit efficiency in vegetable farming is important for both economic, livelihood, and to certain extent - food security. The crop plays a significant role in reducing the poverty levels of the previously disadvantaged in different parts of South Africa.  We argue that cabbage is mostly grown by smallholder farmers whose technical efficiency is not well known. It is… Show more

“…While PA seems like the panacea for agricultural challenges ranging from dwindling resources to environmental degradation, its penetration into the realm of small-scale farming is still in nascent stages (Fountas et al, 2015) and demands more academic exploration (Chataut et al, 2023; Gokool et al, 2023; Hedley, 2015; Perz and Wronowski, 2019). The bespoke nature of small-scale farming introduces multi-faceted barriers to the broad-based incorporation of PA (Gabriel and Gandorfer, 2023), encompassing financial constraints (Achukwu et al, 2023; Bosompem, 2021), technical know-how deficits (Yatribi, 2020), infrastructural lapses (Mdoda et al, 2022) and socio-cultural roadblocks (Alexander, 2018). As such we suggest a nuanced understanding and targeted addressing of these challenges is the linchpin for harnessing PA's potential benefits for small-scale farmers.…”

“…Representing a vast chunk of the agricultural sector, these farmers are pivotal for food security (Hlophe-Ginindza et al, 2020), employment (Ricciardi et al, 2018) and rural development (Gebreselassie et al, 2017). However, their journey is fraught with challenges (Clarkson et al, 2022), including limited access to modern technological tools due to financial constraints (Achukwu et al, 2023), inadequate infrastructure (Mdoda et al, 2022; Smidt and Jokonya, 2021) and a dearth of formalised training (Alemu et al, 2022; Masere and Worth, 2022). The fabric of small-scale farming is intricately woven with traditional knowledge handed down across generations (Altieri, 2009).…”
