Abstract: In lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) experiments in JET, up to 7.3 MW of lower hybrid (LH) power has been coupled to X point plasmas, resulting in sawtooth suppression and full current drive up to 3 MA. The current drive efficiency reached ηCD = 0.26 × 10 20 m −2 • A/W in these experiments. The LH power deposition and driven current profiles can be quite well reproduced with the ray tracing and Fokker-Planck code in JET, even when multipass absorption of the LH wave is dominant. Profile control with off-axis L… Show more

“…Experimental observations of the effect of the total plasma current on LH waves power deposition and current drive efficiency have been reported in [15,[18][19][20]. The LH power deposition profile, measured by fast electron bremsstrahlung (FEB) tomography [21], becomes broader at higher current, an effect which has also been observed in JET [22] and FTU [23]. Moreover the current drive efficiency, determined at zero loop voltage, is found to increase as a function of the plasma current [18][19][20].…”

The magnetic field for the machines is also shown in brackets in the same figure to show the growing trend with operating frequency and magnetic field.…”

“…The highest current drive efficiency introduced as η LH = n e R p I LH /P LH , where n e is the average plasma density, R p is the major radius, I LH is the driven current and P LH is the input radio frequency (RF) power, in multi-megaampere and multi-megawatt regimes was achieved in JET [1] and JT-60U [2] [2,8,9] [10]…”
