Biological control is the only cost-effective, environmentally benign and ecologically viable method available for the control of deadly weeds. Lantana camara is a global weed, which imposes deleterious economic effects on humans and livestock. Microbial products tend to offer a non-chemical alternative in controlling noxious, invasive and pernicious weeds like Lantana. Microbial secondary metabolites or agribiologicals are biotechnological products, which have provided new incentives for natural herbicidal products research. They are environmentally and toxicologically benign in comparison to traditional chemical herbicides. Phoma is a well-known phytopathogenic fungus known to produce an array of bioactive extracellular toxic compounds. Present work deals with screening various agrowastes for phytotoxin production at economically feasible rates followed by formulating them to facilitate their absorption and translocation within host foliar tissues. Herbicidal potential of test strain, was evaluated by shoot cut, seedling and detached leaf bioassays. Standardization and optimization of parameters for production of agribiologicals was achieved from Phoma sp. FGCC#48. Arhar bran extract proved to be the best agrowaste, producing maximum phytotoxin, with tween 80 as a formulant @ 0.5% and this combination could be developed as a potential herbicide against the pernicious weed Lantana.

The allelopathic action can be verified by the presence of phytotoxic substances, molecules that are directed to the agribusiness sector. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition of the methanolic extracts from Colletotrichum dianesei and Xylaria sp., and phytotoxic potential on Lactuca sativa. The fungi were grown in Sabouraud liquid medium supplemented with 0.2% yeast extract, under stirring. The mycelia were subjected to solvent extraction in order of increasing polarity, but methanol extracts were used in this investigation. The allelopathic activity was evaluated at a concentration of 1000 µg/mL in quadruplicate, evaluating: percentage and speed of germination, and growth of lettuce seedlings under laboratory conditions. C. dianesei extract reduced germination percentage by 36% and delayed germination speed by 63.8%, while Xylaria sp. didn't interfere with the germination percentage, it only delayed the germination rate by 43.9%. Root growth was negatively affected in 30.5% and 51.1% under the influence of extracts from Xylaria sp. and C. dianesei, there was also a reduction of 33.1 and 31.8% in the aerial part length, respectively. The thin layer chromatography showed the presence of aromatic substances and terpenes in both extracts, and alkaloids only in C. dianesei extract. The 1H nmr spectra showed signals between 6 and 8.5 ppm (aromatic substances), being relatively more intense for Xylaria sp., signals between 3 and 4 ppm (sugars, showing anomers only for Xylaria sp.) and methyl groups between 0.7 and 1.3 ppm, suggesting terpenes. The results suggest that the fungal species evaluated have phytotoxic potential, and produce terpenes and aromatic substances.

Colletotrichum echinochloae: A Potential Bioherbicide Agent for Control of Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.)

Barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.) is one of the most troublesome weeds in transplanted and direct-seeded rice worldwide. To develop a strategy for the biocontrol of barnyardgrass, fungal isolates were recovered from barnyardgrass plants that exhibited signs of necrosis and wilt. An isolate B-48 with a high level of pathogenicity to barnyardgrass was identified after pathogenicity tests. From cultural and DNA sequence data, this strain was identified as Colletotrichum echinochloae. The inoculation of the barnyardgrass plant with C. echinochloae caused a significant reduction in fresh weight. The isolate B-48 was highly pathogenic to barnyardgrass at the three- to four-leaf stages. When inoculated at a concentration of 1 × 107 spores/mL, barnyardgrass could achieve a reduction in fresh weight of more than 50%. This strain was safe for rice and most plant species. The results of this study indicated that this strain could be a potential mycoherbicide for barnyardgrass control in paddy fields in the future.
