Abstract: The decay of peroxynitrite [O=NOO(-), oxoperoxonitrate(1-)] was examined as a function of concentration (0.050-2.5 mM), temperature (5-45 degrees C), and pH (2.2-10.0). Below 5 degrees C and pH 7, little amounts of the decomposition products nitrite and dioxygen are formed, even when the peroxynitrite concentration is high (2.5 mM). Instead, approximately > or =90% isomerizes to nitrate. At higher pH, decomposition increases at the expense of isomerization, up to nearly 80% at pH 10.0 at 5 degrees C and 90% at… Show more

“…In the presence of HSA-heme-Fe(III), the NO 3 Ϫ and NO 2 Ϫ yields increased (ϳ90%) and decreased (ϳ10%), respectively, as reported for peroxynitrite isomerization catalyzed by human Hb-Fe(III) and horse heart Mb-Fe(III) (70). The same result has been observed in the presence of HSA-hemeFe(III) and/or CO 2 , according to the literature (70,80). Last, ibuprofen does not significantly affect the NO 3 Ϫ and NO 2 Ϫ yields (supplemental Table S1).…”

“…Isomerization-According to the literature (70,80), the spontaneous isomerization of peroxynitrite yielded 76 Ϯ 4% NO 3 Ϫ and 23 Ϯ 3% NO 2 Ϫ . “…PMNs can reduce ONOO -, resulting from the reaction of NO with O2 − , to the stable end-products NO3 − and NO2 − as the protonated form of ONOOH is decomposed [52]. Accordingly, our demonstration of a correlation between the density of PMNs with the concentration of NO3 − and NO2…”
