“…Here, we used Santa Ines ewes, a Brazilian breed mainly raised for meat production (Amarante et al 2004; Ferreira et al 2011), with a considerable milk production (Ferreira et al 2011). In tropical conditions, these animals have a better ability to withstand environmental stressors than European breeds, which may be linked to greater resistance to some infections, as previously described (Amarante et al 2004; Brincarello et al 2005).…”

“…The Santa Inês milk production reported by other authors (Susin et al, 2005;Ribeiro et al, 2007;Araújo et al, 2008;Ferreira et al, 2011) was generally less than 1.06 to 1.47 kg/day. However, the current experiment performed total lamb separation, whereas in other studies, the ewes and lambs were separated daily (Ribeiro et al, 2007) or once a week (Susin et al, 2005;Araújo et al, 2008;Ferreira et al, 2011), which may have stimulated greater milk production by ewes.…”

The different doses of oxytocin used (Araújo et al, 2008) may have also contributed to the differences observed between studies.…”

“…Thus, in the present study, the larger daily weight gain in the pre-weaning period may be due to higher amount of protein and energy supply by maternal milk, compared protein and energy coming from the pastures. Ferreira et al (2011) found 6.6 % of fat and 5.1 % of protein in Santa Ines milk and average production of 1,005.6 mL/day. The higher weight in males can be explained by the influence of hormones, because according to Jacobs et al (1972), the testosterone increases feed efficiency and promotes muscle and skeletal growth.…”
