In the nursing care in mental health, the group resource offers a wide range of effective therapeutic mobility. It enables a variety of relationship between its members and group coordinator, bringing huge benefits to patients and its relatives. Thus, the group work is an ability that must be considered to all the nurses. The present study is qualitative descriptive exploratory. It has as a proposal the identification of the nurses that work specifically on the mental health field, the understanding about the group work they have, how they valorize the group strategies developed in the services that are implanted and verify if it occurs and how it occurs the participation of the nurse group in the different modalities of services in mental health nursing in the Ribeirão Preto. The involved subjects are the nurses of the different mental health services in the city. The collect data it was realized a set of semi-structured interviews, guided by a pre-elaborated script. These were recorded and the verbatim text was transferred by the researcher himself. In the analysis and discussion about the collected data, based on the following steps: the data ordering, the data classification and the final analysis in the empiric and theoretical material articulation. It was identified five categories: Group Concept, Group Activity in the mental health nursing and psychiatry, Nurses participation in the groups and nurse development into groups and in the mental health and psychiatry. The results appointed to a bigger investment during the development of the nurse in relation to the topic, as it's observed that there is no impulse from the health institutions to the preparation of the professional and that the group work depends on motivation of the nurse himself too.
