Abstract: Background Bacillus subtilis CS13 was previously isolated for 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) and poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) co-production. When culturing this strain without L-glutamic acid in the medium, 2,3-BD is the main metabolic product. 2,3-BD is an important substance and fuel with applications in the chemical, food, and pharmaceutical industries. However, the yield and productivity for the B. subtilis strain should be improved for more efficient production of 2,3-BD. … Show more

“…41 In a recent study where untreated molasses was used as a feedstock, Wang et al used Bacillus subtilis CS13 to produce 2,3-BDO, generating a yield of 0.42 g/ g, similar to our results with hydrolyzed sugar media. 41 Another study demonstrated that the efficient 2,3-BDO producer Enterobacter ludwigii was fed with hydrolyzed hemicellulose in which E. ludwigii was able to produce 0.4 g/ g 2,3-BDO/total sugar. 42 Compared to the fermentation of hydrolyzed sugar media, the fermentation of mixed sugar media produced 59% less 2,3-BDO (12.2 g/L).…”

“…As shown in Table , the sterile fermentations of the control and hydrolyzed sugars resulted in similar 2,3-BDO concentrations (20.5 and 20.4 g/L), productivities (0.29 and 0.28 g/L/h), and yields (0.43 and 0.45 g/g), indicating that the hydrolyzed sugars are as highly fermentable as control glucose for 2,3-BDO production. Although the concentration of 2,3-BDO (20.5 and 20.4 g/L) is relatively low compared to other studies , closer to 100 g/L, the yield of 0.43–0.45 g/g is promising considering that the theoretical yield of 2,3-BDO from sugars is 0.5 g/g . In a recent study where untreated molasses was used as a feedstock, Wang et al used Bacillus subtilis CS13 to produce 2,3-BDO, generating a yield of 0.42 g/g, similar to our results with hydrolyzed sugar media .…”

“…Sucrose is abundant followed by lower quantities of glucose and fructose, which is expected. High concentrations of sucrose might impede fermentation performance due to high initial carbon loadings, but prior work has shown that even sucrose concentrations above 200 g/L could be consumed by this class of microbes (Wang et al, 2021).…”

“…Molasses is a promising carbon source with a significant content of fermentable sugars [ 11 ]. In addition, as a cheap and environment-friendly substrate, molasses is widely used to produce many compounds such as succinic acid, glutamic acid, ethanol and 2,3-butanediol [ 10 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”
