Process management in hospitals: an empirically grounded maturity model

Abstract: In order to improve transparency and stabilise health care costs, several countries have decided to reform their healthcare system on the basis of diagnosisrelated groups (DRG). DRGs are not only used for classifying medical treatments, but also for case-based reimbursement, hence induce active competition among hospitals, forcing them to become more efficient and effective. In consequence, hospitals are investing considerably in process orientation and management.

“…The literature does not show a rigorous comprehensive framework to address complex and vast healthcare environments of developing countries (Künzle & Reichert, ), although there are attempts to advance models in developed countries (Cleven, Winter, Wortmann, & Mettler, ). Therefore, this research takes a pragmatic stance and describes and prescribes a low‐cost redesign approach through abstracting redesign principles successfully applied in a public hospital of a middle‐income country.…”

“…Most notably, adoption of new technologies has advanced rapidly in areas where it facilitates the care and cure of diseases. Despite the growing complexity of medical treatments and the increased pressure to perform more efficiently and cost‐effectively (Cleven, Winter, Wortmann, & Mettler, ), PSN have not yet received great attention as possible solution for improving collaborative medical decision making and knowledge exchange in medical practice.…”
