Probabilistic seismic hazard map for Bulgaria as a basis for a new building code

Abstract: Abstract.A seismic hazard map proposed as part of a new building code for Bulgaria is presented here on basis of the recommendations in EUROCODE 8.Seismic source zones within an area of about 200 km around Bulgaria were constructed considering seismicity, neotectonic and geological development. The most time consuming work was to establish a homogeneous earthquake catalogue out of different catalogues. The probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in terms of intensities is performed following Cornell (1968) with… Show more

“…An overview about these approaches is already given in Ardeleanu et al (2005) for Romania and in Simeonova et al (2006) for Bulgaria. The presented earthquake hazard maps are an update respectively improvement of the maps in Ardeleanu et al (2007).…”

“…This evaluation is based on the observed damages -effects in a limited area (Grünthal, 1998). The knowledge of macroseismic intensities and the visualization of their spatial distribution are of great importance for earthquake hazard analysis and seismic risk studies (Armas, 2006;Godermatz et al, 2003;Simeonova et al, 2006). To evaluate the occurrence of large earthquakes and associated seismic risk, appropriate maps have been published for several countries across the world.…”
