ProAna Worlds: Affectivity and Echo Chambers Online

Abstract: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterised by self-starvation. Accounts of AN typically frame the disorder in individualistic terms: e.g., genetic predisposition, perceptual disturbances of body size and shape, experiential bodily disturbances. Without disputing the role these factors may play in developing AN, we instead draw attention to the way disordered eating practices in AN are actively supported by others. “…In a recent study [11] on sources of health misinformation on the Internet, including misinformation about eating disorders, the authors warned of the echo chamber effect that online anorexia and bulimia nervosa communities promoting pro-eating disorder identities have on their members. Another study [12] describes these communities as authentic shared worlds for their members, which support and sustain the epistemic and affective dimensions of anorexia nervosa, as well as the role they play in maintaining the disorder through their intersubjective dimension and echo chamber effect. Evidence has also been found for this effect on pro-anorexia communities on Twitter as opposed to communities that support efforts to recover from the disease.…”

“…But as we'll see, it does reinforce the need to adopt phenomenologically richer relational and multidimensional approaches to AN and eating disorders more generally. These approaches move beyond individualistic perspectives -which focus on things like genetic or psychological predispositions, or disturbances of body-related perceptions and experiences -and instead adopt a more holistic view of how contextual and relational factors give rise to and support disordered eating (Osler 2021b;Osler and Krueger 2021).…”
