Pristine Mangrove Community in Wondama Gulf, West Papua, Indonesia

Abstract: Papua shoreline has been considered as the most extensive mangrove area in Indonesia and great size of their trees. It implies that the forest could be a perfect habitat for biota food web due to its high productivity. Wondama mangrove, part of Cendrawasih National Park -West Papua, had a promising mangrove forest to be discovered. Nevertheless, the forest was rarely studied due to limited access and costly, so that the scientific data was difficult to be found scientifically. A preliminary study was carried o… Show more

“…In mangrove forest nearby residences, mangrove canopy coverage was reaching less than 50% due to illegal logging. Some pristine areas in Papua also found the higher mangrove canopy coverage such as in Wondama (82.46%) [32], Rajaampat (84.73%) [33] and Meos Mangguandi-Biak (93.88%) [30]. Another outermost small island in Papua, Miossu Island had a distinctive canopy coverage among zones, where its value in Rhizophoraceae zone reached the highest value at 85.04% [26].…”

“…The biggest stem diameter of mangrove tree category was 10,57 cm recorded at transect SKTM04, and the smallest tree diameter (6,10 cm) recorded at transect k SKTM03A. The biggest diameter (10,57 cm) of mangrove tree in the Sekotong Bay is much smaller compared the diameter of naturally mangrove tree of the District of Wondama-Papua (Dharmawan & Widyastuti, 2017). The high and diameter comparison of mangrove tree among transects are given in Figure 4.…”
