Priority Based Congestion Detection and Avoidance in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: The primary objective of event driven wireless sensor networks is to route the detected or monitored data at the earliest to the base station depending on their degree of priority since the data generated in a sensor network has different importance. In order to avoid indiscriminate dropping of data during congestion we propose a novel congestion protocol named priority based congestion detection and avoidance in wireless sensor networks. It aims to provide differentiated data delivery during congestion which … Show more

“…Rangwala et al [17] proposed an equation for measuring congestion by measuring instantaneous queue size exponentially in terms of average weighted: π΄π‘£π‘”π‘ž = ( 1 βˆ’ π‘Šπ‘ž ) * π΄π‘£π‘”π‘ž + π‘Šπ‘ž * πΌπ‘›π‘ π‘‘π‘ž (4) Where Avgq is average queue length of node, Wq is weighted queue length of node and Instq is queue length of the node at current instant. According to T. Pei et al [18], for minimizing delay and overcoming the issue of congestion, a delay-aware congestion control mechanism is used. The proposed model for reducing delay, considers the real-time buffer occupancy.…”

“…The packet loss or drop rate can be minimized by adopting a priority based congestion detection and the avoidance scheme. This strategy differentiated data delivery during congestion which includes the packet priority assignment, priority based queue scheduler and dynamic dual-path congestion algorithm [35].…”

“…In all these models, depending on the event, high multimedia traffic volume consisting of video streams and snapshots are sent in an upstream fashion, causing congestion, especially in sensor nodes which are closer to the sink. Nodes are normally deployed in large quantities spanning larger geographical areas making congestion even more likely to occur [26]. As seen above, congestion in WMSNs is caused by several factors.…”
