Primary Extraskeletal Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma Arising from the Pancreas

Abstract: We report here on a case of primary extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma that arose from the pancreas. A 41-year-old man was evaluated by CT to find the cause of his abdominal pain. The CT scans showed a heterogeneously enhancing necrotic mass with numerous areas of coarse calcification, and this was located in the left side of the retroperitoneal space and involved the body and tail of the pancreas. Portal venography via the celiac axis also showed invasion of the splenic vein. Following excision of the m… Show more

“…El mediastino, retroperitoneo y riñón son localizaciones menos frecuentes (4,6) . El CME es más frecuente en mujeres, con presentación bimodal; presenta dos momentos de mayor incidencia, el primero en la tercera década, comprometiendo cabeza y cuello, y el segundo en la quinta década con predilección por los tejidos blandos, especialmente el muslo (4,9,10) .…”

“…Matrix mineralization is more common in EMCS but calcifications may not be evident in rare instances [21]. On contrast enhancement the tumor appears lobulated with peripheral enhancement and sometimes with central low attenuation areas that probably represent necrosis [5,22]. The uncalcified areas have low attenuation similar to muscle on CT [20].…”

“…7 Primary pancreatic chondrosarcoma is extremely rare; there has been only one other case reported in the literature. 3 Histological classification of chondrosarcoma includes myxoid, mesenchymal, and dedifferentiated types. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma was first reported by Lichtenstein and Bernstein 8 in 1959, and extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma in soft tissues was reported by Dowling 9 in 1964.…”
