Abstract: ABSTRACT:Introduction: breast cancer is one of the main causes of death among women in Brazil and worldwide. The diagnosis of breast neoplasms usually represents an emotional burden, and it may lead to adjustment reactions and even be the trigger for affective disorders (mainly depression), anxiety or psychosis. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is one of the most used mechanisms for the evaluation of depression in research and in clinics. “…As for age group as categorized into pre and postmenopausal, authors highlighted that menopausal state has significantly associated with depression in breast cancer patients since estrogen acts as cholinergic agonist and increases norepinephrine activity, those multiple modulations suggest that estrogen may have an antidepressant like effect and enhances neurotransmitter activity [11]. Other authors didn't find any effect of age or menopausal state on depression [12], some authors even found, in contrast to our study, that younger age being more associated with depression [13]. However lot of other demographic and tumor related factors may come with confusion biais effect on results explaining such variability.…”

“…Such information for patients in South America is timely, particularly in Brazil, with a population of almost 210-million people experiencing a 500% increase in cancer incidence between 1995 and 2015 [19]. To date, the few studies conducted in Brazil have found that 21 to 39% of cancer patients displayed clinical levels of anxiety, and from 17 to 47% endorse depression [20][21][22]. However, these studies have substantial methodological limitations, such as use of cross-sectional design [20][21][22] and convenience sampling without specific eligibility criteria based on the time since diagnosis and treatment type or status [22,24].…”

However, these studies have substantial methodological limitations, such as use of cross-sectional design [20][21][22] and convenience sampling without specific eligibility criteria based on the time since diagnosis and treatment type or status [22,24]. These limitations also preclude reliable, precise knowledge on the prevalence, trajectory, and predictors of distress and problems in daily living among newly diagnosed cancer patients in Brazil.…”

“…O câncer de mama também traz consigo uma sobrecarga emocional que pode desencadear as reações mais diversas de ajustamento ou mesmo ser gatilho para distúrbios afetivos como a depressão, ansiedade ou até mesmo psicoses (ABREU, 2014;CARVALHO et al, 2015).…”
