Prevalence of Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 Virus Resistant to Oseltamivir in Shiraz, Iran, During 2012 - 2013

Abstract: Background:Oseltamivir has been used as a drug of choice for the prophylaxis and treatment of human influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 infection across the world. However, the most frequently identified oseltamivir resistant virus, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, exhibit the H275Y substitution in NA gene. Objectives:This study aimed to determine the prevalence and phylogenetic relationships of oseltamivir resistance in influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses isolated in Shiraz, Iran.Patients and Methods:Throat swab samples were collected f… Show more

“…The mortality rate was 140 (3.8%) [12]. In the present study, of 123 patients diagnosed with the possible diagnosis of influenza, a positive PCR for H1N1was detected in 58 (47.2%), which is higher than other studies in our country [13]. This can be because of better sampling and more precise clinical suspicion in the diagnosis of patients, even though it is probable that true H1N1 cases are higher and our test had also false negative results because of treatment having begun before testing.…”

“…In a similar study conducted in Beijing, China, all of the A/H1N1 pdm09 viruses isolated in 2012-2013 were sensitive to oseltamivir. 26 Circulating strains of the virus during influenza season in Nepal revealed many similarities with our neighboring countries and the region. Our finding showed year-round transmission with a peak influenza activity during the rainy and winter season is similar to Thailand, Northern Vietnam and Lao-PDR.…”

“…Drug resistance strains were not found among the strains of influenza B virus [8]. However the recent data suggest the development of resistance to the neuraminidase inhibitors from 0 to 64% of isolates of influenza A and B viruses in different countries [36].…”
