Prevalence of double burden on malnutrition at household level in four Latin America countries

Abstract: Objectives: to estimate the prevalence of maternal overweight and short stature in children at household level in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study. Population-based studies on children (0-5 years old) and women (15 to 49 years old) who participated in the Pesquisa Nacional de Demografia e Saúde da Criança e da Mulher(National Survey on Children and Women Demography and Health) in Brazil and the Encuesta Nacional de Demografía y Salud, (National Survey on Demogra… Show more

“…Meanwhile, over the last two decades, the number of children with overnutrition in SSA rose steeply, from 5.4 million in 1990 to 10.3 million in 2015 [ 3 ], with a prevalence of overweight/obesity of 6.8% among preschool children in 2010 [ 4 ]. Instead of the two distinct silos of under-nutrition or over-nutrition thought to be restricted to countries of the global south or global north respectively, a double burden of malnutrition (DBM) has emerged globally [ 5 6 7 ], with an increasing prevalence in many low- and middle-income (LMICs) [ 8 9 ]. DBM is defined as a situation where high levels of undernutrition (underweight, childhood stunting, and wasting) coexist with overnutrition (overweight and obesity) at the individual, household/family, or population-level [ 10 ].…”

“…They observed that Latin America and the Caribbean exhibited highest regional prevalence of overweight in both rural and urban settings, and this prevalence was increasing annually by about 0.50%. Very recently, Temponi and Velasquez-Melendez (2020) analysed data from 26,506 households located in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru. They reported the overall incidence of DBM to be 2.2% in Brazil, 9.3% in Bolivia, 3.2% in Columbia and 6.7% in Peru.…”

“…Inadequate maternal and child healthcare also is closely related to micronutrient deficiencies (Albalak et al, 2020; Vaezghasemi et al, 2014). Rapid changes in economic development and income patterns have resulted in the shifting of the traditional modes of diet to high-calorie and fat-containing foods along with canned/processed foods (Bose & Sen, 2020; Debnath et al, 2018, 2019; Ihab et al, 2013; Kosaka & Umezaki, 2017; Temponi & Melendez, 2020). Such changes in dietary patterns, coupled with sedentary lifestyles, have contributed to household DBM, with mother being overweight and children being stunted within the same households.…”
