Abstract: BackgroundThis study describes the prevalence of dementia and major dementia subtypes in Spanish elderly.MethodsWe identified screening surveys, both published and unpublished, in Spanish populations, which fulfilled specific quality criteria and targeted prevalence of dementia in populations aged 70 years and above. Surveys covering 13 geographically different populations were selected (prevalence period: 1990-2008). “…Consistent with previous findings, we show that ageing per se constitutes a considerable oxidative insult in the brain. However, our data also suggest that a long-term poor vitamin C status does not accelerate this process. The overall prevalence of age-associated brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinsonism and dementia is increasing in the Western World as a natural consequence of the improved average lifetime expectancy [1][2][3]. This has prompted investigations into the underlying mechanisms associated with ageing to become a growing field of interest.…”
