Prevalence of carotid artery stenosis in ischaemic heart disease patients in Bangladesh

Abstract: Background:Concurrent carotid artery stenosis and ischaemic heart disease rates are increasing day by day in Bangladesh. Moreover, carotid artery stenosis has been identified as a high-risk factor for postoperative ischaemic cerebral inconvenience following coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Methods:This observational cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate 200 study patients from July 2017 to June 2018. Patients with coronary artery disease scheduled for isolated elective coronary artery bypass graf… Show more

“… 5–8 Moreover, in recent studies, Mahmoudi et al 14 and Drohomirecka et al 15 demonstrated a strong correlation between IHD and significant CAS and found that about 30% and 18% of the study population, respectively, had ≥50% carotid stenosis among IHD patients scheduled for CABG surgery, similar to other study results. 3 , 8 , 12 , 13 , 16 , 17 …”

“…Right carotid artery severe stenosis leads to cerebral circulatory insufficiency, intracerebral steal phenomenon [ 59 ], reduction of blood flow of the right cerebral hemisphere, hemichorea [ 60 ], transient ischemic attacks, and strokes [ 61 ], and the rates of concurrent carotid artery stenosis and CAD are elevating gradually day by day. CAD patients who are undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention have severe carotid artery stenosis and the majority of patients with carotid artery severe stenosis have complex CAD [ 62 ]. The severe multivessel coronary artery stenosis as a risk factor is related to severe carotid artery stenosis [ 62 ].…”

The severe multivessel coronary artery stenosis as a risk factor is related to severe carotid artery stenosis [ 62 ]. Patients with concurrent carotid and coronary artery severe stenosis are demonstrated to have a more severe atherosclerosis involving multiple arteries [ 62 ].…”

“…Following cardiac surgery, pain disrupts the humoral and neuroendocrine systems' equilibrium, increasing stress hormone levels and myocardial oxygen demand. 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 As a result, arrhythmias and myocardial ischemia are increased. Pain also impairs mechanical ventilation and mobility restriction.…”
