Prevalence, Distribution, and Diversity of Salmonella Strains Isolated From a Subtropical Lake

Abstract: This study investigated the prevalence, serovar distribution, antimicrobial resistance, and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing of Salmonella enterica isolated from Lake Zapotlán, Jalisco, Mexico. Additionally, the association of the presence of Salmonella with physicochemical and environmental parameters was analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). Salmonella spp. were identified in 19 of 63 (30.15%) samples. The prevalence of Salmonella was positively cor… Show more

“…Since the bacteria have evolved to be resistant to various antimicrobials, constant antibiotic surveillance is warranted, and the genotyping techniques are essential to tracing the source of the bacteria. The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was considered as the golden standard genotyping technique for differentiation of Salmonella isolates [ 17 , 18 ]. Furthermore, it can also be used to trace the source of infections and the transmission route of the strains [ 18 ].…”

“…We can see that the monitoring points located in Lake Cajititlán increase the average TSI of the whole subbasin. Lake Cajititlán has been described as one of the most polluted water reservoirs in the country, with critical eutrophication levels reported over the years [21,25,52,53]. The San Marcos Lake subbasin (Figure 6B) had an average TSI of 91.6.…”

“…In this study, the state of Jalisco was chosen to test the methodological approach. Jalisco is the main livestock producer in Mexico, with one of the strongest economies, where eutrophication has been reported as a consequence of poor management of livestock farming and of agricultural waste [8,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. According to Rojas Ramírez and Vallejo Rodríguez [26], the livestock farming industry is still growing in the region, which is driving a shift in land use from natural ecosystems to animal production surfaces.…”

“…Eutrophic conditions caused by high nutrient and organic matter loads have been reported for multiple waterbodies across the state. This is mainly due to excessive uncontrolled solid waste and wastewater discharges by agro-industrial activities, leading to anoxic conditions and toxic cyanobacterial blooms, which can damage wildlife and even pose a threat to nearby settlements (de Anda et al, 2019;Díaz-Torres et al, 2020;Gradilla-Hernández et al, 2020). In order to reduce this eutrophication, the management practices of both solid waste and wastewater must be improved to decrease the amounts of organic matter and nutrient discharge going into Jalisco's hydrographic systems (Montoya et al, 1997;Abrol and Sharma, 2012;Jayme-Torres and Hansen, 2018).…”
