Background and objectives Hypertension (HTN), a major global health concern, is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, premature death and disability, worldwide. It is important to develop an automated system to diagnose HTN at an early stage. Therefore, this study devised a machine learning (ML) system for predicting patients with the risk of developing HTN in Ethiopia. Materials and methods The HTN data was taken from Ethiopia, which included 612 respondents with 27 factors. We employed Boruta-based feature selection method to identify the important risk factors of HTN. The four well-known models [logistics regression, artificial neural network, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting (XGB)] were developed to predict HTN patients on the training set using the selected risk factors. The performances of the models were evaluated by accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and area under the curve (AUC) on the testing set. Additionally, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method is one of the explainable artificial intelligences (XAI) methods, was used to investigate the associated predictive risk factors of HTN. Results The overall prevalence of HTN patients is 21.2%. This study showed that XGB-based model was the most appropriate model for predicting patients with the risk of HTN and achieved the accuracy of 88.81%, precision of 89.62%, recall of 97.04%, F1-score of 93.18%, and AUC of 0. 894. The XBG with SHAP analysis reveal that age, weight, fat, income, body mass index, diabetes mulitas, salt, history of HTN, drinking, and smoking were the associated risk factors of developing HTN. Conclusions The proposed framework provides an effective tool for accurately predicting individuals in Ethiopia who are at risk for developing HTN at an early stage and may help with early prevention and individualized treatment.

Research evidences show that 5 million people die of stroke, and 5 million people are also left with permanent physical disability globally every year, due to the incidence of stroke. Stroke remains the third leading cause of mortality and physical disability among young adults and the aged in the developing and developed nations of the world. The public knowledge of stroke risk factors and signs have not changed. Heart attack and stroke are the symptoms of cardiovascular disease, morbidity and mortality worldwide. Stroke attack is increasing among young adults, due to changing lifestyles. This study assessed the influence of strategic communication on stroke and hypertension literacy. The paper adopted qualitative descriptive approach to examine the elements involved in stroke cases and rising hypertension among young adults in Nigeria. The paper recommends that public health campaigns targeted at youths should aim to promote cardiovascular health and wellness. It is essential for the health care providers to enlighten young adults at early stage to imbibe cardiovascular wellness in Nigeria. Besides, early arrival of stroke patients to stroke centres or hospitals for immediate medical attention should be widely emphasized through public education and strategic communication process in the media.

Background The prevalence of hypertension (HTN) differs among regions and income groups, showing a substantial increase in low- and middle-income countries. The development of hypertension is modulated by modifiable lifestyle factors, and uncontrolled hypertension poses a risk for the onset of cardiovascular diseases. Objective To determine the community-level point-prevalence and factors associated with self-reported HTN among adults in Butambala district, central Uganda. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among adults aged ≥18 years in Budde subcounty, central Uganda. Data on sociodemographic characteristics and behavior were collected using a semistructured questionnaire. Self-reported HTN was assessed using a single question: “Do you have high blood pressure?” Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of self-reported HTN. Results A total of 565 participants (53.5% female) with a median age of 38 years (IQR: 26–52) were included in the study. The prevalence of self-reported hypertension was 18.9%. Factors independently associated with HTN were age 60 years or older (aOR: 2.9, 95% CI: 1.64–5.23, p<0.001), female sex (aOR: 3.3, 95% CI: 2.3–6.3, p<0.001), being widowed (aOR: 10.4, 95% CI: 1.25–87.14, p=0.03), secondary (aOR: 0.4, 95% CI: 0.20–0.85, p=0.016) and tertiary (aOR: 0.2, 95% CI: 0.09–0.64, p=0.005) education, unemployment (aOR: 3.0, 95% CI: 1.11–7.96, p=0.03), tobacco use (aOR: 2.9, 95% CI: 1.83–4.53, p<0.001), having had at least one blood pressure measurement during antenatal visit (aOR: 4.7, 95% CI: 1.97–11.33, p<0.001) or medical checkup (aOR: 10.7, 95% CI: 6.06–18. Conclusion We observed a high prevalence of self-reported HTN affecting approximately one in five participants. More efforts are required to enhance routine screening, health education, and accessibility to HTN services in rural areas, with a particular emphasis on implementing HTN prevention and control strategies to effectively reduce the prevalence of HTN.
