Abstract: Twomodels are presented to estimate the average specific permeation resistance through a packed bed of binary mixture of particles. To confirm the validity of these models, packing and permeation experiments are carried out for systems of both spherical and non-spherical particles with particle size ratio ranging from about 2 to 10, and it is shown that estimated results agree well with experimental values. The variation of average specific permeation resistance with mixing ratio and particle size ratio is als… Show more

“…In effect, smaller particles can fill in spaces that would necessarily occur within suspensions consisting only of larger particles. Consistent with this effect, resistance to dewatering has been found to be larger, in the case of mixtures, than could be explained in terms of a linear combination of results from dewatering tests with uniform suspensions (Abe et al 1979;MacDonald et al 1991).…”

“…Modeling of the average specific cake resistance for a binary mixture containing filter aids and the material to be filtered has been carried out by Abe et al 34 They used Kozeny-Carman's equation as a basis for two models, which in turn were based on the assumption of complete mixing and segregation of particles.…”

“…7) varied from 91.4 to 94.7 %, in the case of body feed, and from 91.0 to 94.0 in the case of precoat (Table 2). Modeling of the average specific cake resistance for a binary mixture containing filter aids and the material to be filtered has been carried out by Abe et al 34 They used Kozeny-Carman's equation as a basis for two models, which in turn were based on the assumption of complete mixing and segregation of particles. The assumption of complete mixing was shown to be valid for non-spherical particles, whereas segregation phenomena had an important role in the case of spherical particles of significantly different sizes.…”
