Prepulse Inhibition and Habituation of Acoustic Startle Response in Male MDMA (‘Ecstasy’) Users, Cannabis Users, and Healthy Controls

Abstract: Chronic administration of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is associated with long-term depletion of serotonin (5-HT) and loss of 5-HT axons in the brains of rodents and nonhuman primates. Despite the broad database concerning the selective serotonergic neurotoxicity of recreational MDMA consumption by humans, controversy still exists with respect to the question of whether the well-known functional consequences of these neurotoxic effects, such as memory impairment, were caused by chronic 5-HT deficie… Show more

“…Kedzior and Martin-Iverson [47] impaired attentional modulation and reduced PPI among chronic users relative to controls. Other studies are consistent with these results [48,49], but not all [50]. In examining the interaction between schizophrenia and cannabis use on PPI, impaired modulation of PPI was demonstrated in schizophrenia patients (users and non-users) and in control users compared with non-cannabis-using controls [51].…”

“…Drug use was assessed with the Interview for Psychotropic Drug Consumption (Quednow et al, 2004). ADHD diagnoses and current severity of ADHD symptoms were evaluated with the ADHD self-rating scale (ADHD-SR) (Rosler et al, 2004) corresponding to DSM-IV criteria.…”

“…39 Drug use was assessed by means of the Interview for Psychotropic Drug Consumption, which has been described in detail elsewhere. 40 The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was used to assess symptoms of depression. 41 The Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R) served as a screening measure of general psychiatric symptoms.…”
