Preparation of floatable TiO 2 /poly(vinyl alcohol)‐alginate composite for the photodegradation of ammonia wastewater

Abstract: Summary The use of floatable photocatalyst supports is an operable strategy of increasing photocatalytic performance in terms of improving light absorption. In this work, floatable organic support based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was used to float commercial TiO2 P25 nanoparticles. At first, by the use of CaCl2 and boric acid at pH 3 the cross‐linking of PVA blended with sodium alginate (PVA‐Alg) was improved to enhance chemical and mechanical stability, and then it was chemically modified by trimethylchloro… Show more

“…The PL spectrum shows two emissions at 352 nm and 800 nm. Based on similar researches and peak matching pure TiO2 peaks at 342nm 27 , but when silver and PVA are added they shift the peak to a lower energy and longer wavelength region (RED SHIFT) 28,29 .…”

“…It has high tensile strength and flexibility while being nontoxic and degradable. 11,12 PVA is modified with CMC as a hybrid system to decrease cost and improve environmental friendliness. PVA was chosen for this system because its OH groups can act as a source of hydrogen bonding during the creation of polymer blends.…”

“…Based on the study of photocatalytic reforming of cellulose with Pt/TiO 2 as the catalyst, Kawai and Sakata used similar methods into decomposed untreated biomass products, including algae, rice, turf, olive oil, and even insect and animal excrement. What's more, photocatalytic reforming of coal, petroleum, organic wastewater, and other complex raw materials such as beeswax and even fuel has also been studied. The products of photoreforming is various, for example, the photocatalytic conversion of lignin could produce many different products like guaiacol, vanillin, and organic acids .…”
