“…A different result was reported by Mihai et al,28 who found that 40% of the pullulan remains non sulfated in the SO 3 .py complex at 80 °C over 4 h. These results were in agreement with the NMR data and the yield values.…”

“…In sulfated samples (GCS6 and GCS8) spectra a new signal is observed at d 67.8 in both spectra. The same signal is visualized in opposite amplitude to those of CH 3 and CH signals in DEPT 135 experiment so based on this observation and that substitution of sulfate group on primary carbons causes an increase of chemical shift of 6 to 8 ppm 4,23,32 we concluded that the sulfate substitution on sulfated cashew gum occur on primary carbons (C-6).…”

“…This role of sulfate groups has precedents in other polysaccharides. A polysaccharide of Grifola frondosa mycelia enhances antitumor effects and peritoneal macrophage phagocytosis by chemical sulfation (28), and a sulfated derivative of β-glucan isolated from sporophytes of Laminaria digitata stimulates phagocytic and NK cell activity (29). In the case of other types of β-glucan, we confirmed that those from Lentinula edodes and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Wako, Osaka, Japan) failed to enhance cytokine production by peritoneal macrophages in response to LAB (data not shown).…”

“…Moreover, one of the mechanisms contributing to these effects was the promotion of KK221 phagocytosis by macrophages and/or dendritic cells. Enhancement of macrophage phagocytic activity by fucoidan or other sulfated polysaccharides has been demonstrated in several reports (2,28,29), and could be involved in the synergistic activation of in vitro cytokine production and in vivo anti-allergic immune responses that we observed in response to fucoidan and KK221.…”
