Preparation, indications and results of human amniotic membrane transplantation for ocular surface disorders

Abstract: In comparison with other biologic tissues used as reconstructive grafts, the amniotic membrane has the advantage that it is thinner and better tolerated by the patient. Amniotic membrane, when appropriately preserved, can be used as a substrate replacement, such that host cells can migrate into the membrane to form new and healthy tissue. The amniotic membrane is the deeper layer of the fetal membrane; it is avascular, multilayered tissue with antiangiogenic, antiscarring and anti-inflammatory properties. Sinc… Show more

“…Amniotic membrane transplantation is beneficial with keratectomy in the case of lipid deposition, and it has been used to treat PEDs that occur with partial (not severe or total) LSCD [Javadi and Baradaran-Rafii, 2009;Kadar et al, 2009]. Amniotic membrane transplantation can be used as a graft in stem cell transplantation [Meller and Tseng, 1998;Sangwan and Tseng, 2001;Lavker et al, 2004;Alio et al, 2005;Kheirkhah et al, 2008;Liang, 2009;Liang et al, 2009;Tseng, 2001]. “…In addition, it is often used as an adjunct to medical therapy to decrease ocular surface inflammation and reduce scarring [2, 9, 79, 8195]. Besides, multilayered AMT is an appropriate surrogate in severe corneal thinning [96, 97]. Further, amniotic membrane may also be applied to the cornea using a contact lens type carrier (ProKera, Bio-Tissue, Inc., Miami, FL) with the amniotic membrane being secured to a flexible plastic ring [11, 98].…”
