Preparation, characterization, and properties of environmentally friendly waterborne poly(urethane acrylate)/silica hybrids

Abstract: A series of environmentally friendly waterborne poly(urethane acrylate) (WPUA)/silica (SiO 2 ) hybrids were synthesized by a sol-gel process on the basis of isophorone diisocyanate, polyester polyol (GE-210), dimethylpropionic acid, butyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate monomers, tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), and 3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GLYMO) as a coupling agent. The mechanical properties of the WPUA/SiO 2 hybrids were investigated through tensile and hardness tests. Fourier transform infrared spec… Show more

“…Such a surface morphology enhanced the water and friction resistances. 23 Thermal properties of WPU and WPU/TiO 2 composites Figure 10 shows the DSC scan curves for the WPU and WPU/TiO 2 hybrid composites. The WPU/TiO 2 hybrid composites had a higher glass transition temperature T g of hard segment than the pure WPU.…”

“…While a wide variety of properties known from polyurethane chemistry and technology is also achievable from an aqueous medium, WPUs have properties that are very close to solvent‐borne polyurethanes. Furthermore, WPU possesses superior properties such as abrasion resistance, high flexibility at low temperature, excellent adhesion to glass surfaces and film‐forming ability at ambient temperature, which leads to continuously increasing applications in many fields including coating, printing, ink, adhesive and fibre processing…”

“…However, the hardness of CWPU films was constant from WPUi3 to WPUi5. This may be due to the excessive nano-silica in CWPU that led to nonuniform dispersion, and did no help to the formation of IPN [26].…”
