Preparation and property of chromium carbide thermal diffusion coating on cold working die materials

Abstract: Thermal diffusion (TD) salt bath chromizing of cold working dies was studied. Firstly, it obtained an ideal salt bath formula by comparing with a variety of formulas, and then obtained the influence rule of coating thickness based on studying of some process parameters. The microstructure morphologies and phase structures of the TD chromizing coating were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) and other modern analysis methods. Meanwhile, it carried out a system of testin… Show more

“…TRD is a process of coating steels with a hard and wear-resistant layer of carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides [1,2,3,4]. The TRD process is very useful for surface-treating products such as steel tools because the formed carbide coating provides high resistance to abrasive wear, adhesive wear, fretting wear, corrosion, and oxidation, which cannot be provided by other conventional surface treatment methods [4,6].…”

“…After salt bath chromizing, a compound layer is formed, which can significantly improve the performance of metals [5]. However, for obtaining the effective thickness of chromium carbide coating, a salt bath must be carried out at reasonable temperature and time [6].…”

“…These ceramics mainly comprise transition metal carbides and nitrides [4]. As one of the most widely used ceramic coatings, chromium carbide coatings have been extensively used as protective coating on various tools, dies and sliding bearing mainly due to its high resistance to wear, corrosion and oxidation and its high hardness [5,6].…”
