Preparation and photodynamic antibacterial/anticancer effects of ultralong-lifetime room-temperature phosphorescent N-doped carbon dots

Abstract: The URTP CNDs largely extends the collision time between T1 state exciton and O2, which improve quantum yield of singlet oxygen (1O2) in solutions, facilitating the photodynamic antibacterial and anticancer effects.

“…As shown in Figure 1c, it can be seen that CDs show broad FTIR transmission from around 2500−3500 cm −1 , which might be attributed to the stretching vibration of several groups, including amino (−NH 2 ), methylene (−CH 2 −), and hydroxyl (−OH) groups. 28,29 The sharp peaks at 2921 and 2853 cm −1 correspond to sp 3 C−H bond vibrations and suggest the formation of a graphitic carbon core in the CDs. The absorbance peaks at 1743 and 903 cm −1 , which are associated with CO and CC bonds, further confirm the presence of a p conjugation system as the core structures of CDs.…”

“…Similar phenomena and antibacterial mechanisms have been also found in the other reports. [59][60][61] Especially in Miao's group's work, the obtained CNDs possessed ultralonglifetime room-temperature phosphorescent. 57 Their extremely long T 1 exciton lifetime and the increase of collision time with O 2 improved the probability of energy transfer, leading to a tremendous increase in the production of 1 O 2 , thus showing an excellent photodynamic sterilization effect.…”

“…N-doping is another approach promoted in the literature for the synthesis of antibacterial CDs. ,, While a general theory connecting N-doping and antibacterial activities has not been developed, followers of this approach swarm. A possible reason is that N-doping can be easily achieved as long as a N-containing starting material is used in the synthesis of CDs .…”
