The TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite was prepared by means of the SiO 2 -particle-entrapment method. The FTIR data showed the presence of Si-O-Ti stretching vibration band at 970 cm -1 in the TiO 2 /SiO 2 composite, suggesting a reaction between TiO 2 and silica on the TiO 2 particle surface during the silicagel formation around the TiO 2 particles. The photocatalytic efficiency of TiO 2 immobilized in silicagel was compared with that of the conventional TiO 2 Degussa P25 catalyst. For this purpose, the degradation of indigo carmin (IC) dye was used as model molecule in the tests. The effect of operational parameters such as catalyst loading and dye concentration on the photocatalytic degradation of the model dye was investigated. The rate of degradation increased with increasing catalyst loading, and when the concentration of the dye decreases.

Amine-functionalized SiO 2 /TiO 2 photocatalytic films have been synthesized using the peroxo titanic acid (PTA) approach coupled with the solgel dip-coating method. The 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) were employed as the amine functional groups and silica precursor. The effects of the ratio of APTMS/MTMOS, PTA refluxed time, and pH of prepared sol on the characteristics and the formaldehyde degradation efficiency were investigated. Physicochemical properties of prepared photocatalysts were characterized with nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement, SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectrophotometer, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The XRD and FTIR results indicated that the obtained photocatalysts consisted of -NH 2 groups, SiO 2 , and anatase TiO 2 . The photocatalytic films showed high transmittance of 80-90% in the visible light region. The obtained film prepared with the APTMS/MTMOS ratio of 0.03, pH of 1.8, and 10 h of refluxed time possessed high specific surface area (604.0 m 2 g −1 ) and 85% formaldehyde degradation efficiency. The enhancement of formaldehyde degradation efficiency was observed when increasing the PTA refluxed time. The repeatability of photocatalytic film was also tested, and the degradation efficiency was 92.0% of initial efficiency after seven cycles.

La fotocatálisis es un proceso en el que la incidencia de radiación ultravioleta sobre un semiconductor produce la degradación de la materia orgánica en contacto con el mismo. Este proceso encuentra diversas aplicaciones que requieren el uso del fotocatalizador (semiconductor) en suspensión o soportado sobre un sustrato. La aplicación de recubrimientos fotocatalíticos sobre sustratos cerámicos da lugar a la obtención de superficies multifuncionales con propiedades autolimpiantes relacionadas con la capacidad de degradación e incluso mineralización de compuestos orgánicos presentes en el agua o el aire. La preparación de los recubrimientos soportados sobre el sustrato cerámico se realiza mediante la aplicación de suspensiones con un tamaño de partícula nanométrico (10 -9 m). Debido a su pequeño tamaño de partícula este tipo de materiales presentan propiedades distintas a las de los materiales macroscópicos. La reciente aparición de materiales con actividad fotocatalítica hace necesaria la existencia de un método para conocer y cuantificar dicha propiedad. Actualmente no existe ninguna norma para la determinación de la función fotocatalítica de materiales. Por ello en el presente trabajo, se ha llevado a cabo la puesta a punto de un método de ensayo que permita la determinación de dicha función para materiales soportados sobre un sustrato cerámico. The process is found in various applications that require the use of the photocatalyst (semiconductor) in suspension or supported on a substrate. The application of photocatalytic coatings onto ceramic substrates yields multifunctional surfaces with self-cleaning properties related to their capacity to degrade, and even mineralise, organic compounds present in water or air. The photocatalytic coatings supported on ceramic substrates are obtained by applying suspensions of nanometre-sized particles (10 -9 m) onto the substrate. Owing to the small particle size, this type of material has different properties from those of macroscopic materials. The recent appearance of photocatalytically active materials requires having a method for determining and quantifying photocatalytic activity. No standard is currently available for determining the photocatalytic function of materials.
