Preparation and Evaluation of Aminomalononitrile-Coated Ca–Sr Metal–Organic Frameworks as Drug Delivery Carriers for Antibacterial Applications

Adhisankar Vadivelmurugan,
Ramalingam Sharmila,
Whei-Lin Pan
et al.

Abstract: After orthopedic surgery, antibiotics are usually employed to reduce the risk of infection. If it is possible to enhance antimicrobial functionality and incorporate antimicrobial agents into the bone-filling matrix, not only it can promote bone tissue regeneration, but it can also enable localized administration of medication to elevate antibacterial efficacy. Meanwhile, previous studies have shown that calcium and strontium can support the growth of osteoblastic cells and diminish bone resorption or deteriora… Show more

“…They can form bio-MOFs (metal–bioorganic frameworks) through methods such as surface attachment, covalent bonding, pore encapsulation, and in situ encapsulation. MOFs have been extensively applied in biomedical applications, such as Zr-MOF-loaded naproxen as a carrier for specific intestinal delivery [ 9 ], Mg-MOF to facilitate rapid drug metabolism [ 10 ], and Ca-Sr-MOF-loaded tetracycline for antimicrobial use [ 11 ]. The excellent encapsulation properties of MOF materials make them a unique encapsulation system.…”
