Preparation and characterization of polynorbornene/sepiolite hybrid nanocomposite films

Abstract: Polynorbornene/sepiolite hybrid nanocomposite films were prepared using polynorbornene dicarboximide and modified sepiolite with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES). Exo-N-(3,5-dichlorophenylnorbornene)-5,6-dicarboxyimide (monomer) and their copolymers were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization using ruthenium catalysts. Subsequently, the surface-modified sepiolite by 3-APTES was mixed with the polynorbornene copolymers to prepare hybrid nanocomposite films. The modified sepiolite particles were well … Show more

“…These groups can CONTACT Mohammad Atai m.atai@ippi.ac.ir attach to different pendant functional organosilyl groups, to form some organic characteristics to the precursor inorganic support. [5] Polymer/sepiolite nanocomposites have attracted considerable interest in recent years for exhibiting improved thermal, [6,7] mechanical, [8,9] barrier, [10] optical properties [11] and fire retardancy. [12,13] The structure and morphology of sepiolite-based nanocomposites are more controllable than other layered silicate nanocomposites because of the relatively weak interactions and small contact surfaces between the sepiolite nanorods.…”

“…[11,12,15] Likewise, polynorbornene dicarboximide/sepiolite hybrid nanocomposite films have been prepared with enhanced mechanical and dimensional stabilities, as well as upgraded oxygen barrier properties. [16] In this regard, this approach is expected to improve not only the gas barrier properties of this kind of polymers but also the ionic transport properties such as water absorption and ionic conductivity when clays functionalized with ionic groups are used.…”

“…The discontinuity of the silica sheets provides increasing of the silanol groups (Si‐OH) at external surface of the sepiolite particles, which improves the interfacial interaction of sepiolite with organic solvent and polymers. As the presence of the tunnels and Si‐OH, sepiolite can dispersed well in polymer matrix and thereby improve the mechanical properties, thermal stability, flame retardancy, and barrier properties of polymers . In our previous work, we synthesized in situ modified resol nanocomposites with different clay contents from 3 to 50 wt %.…”
