Preparation and Characterization of BiTaS3 a New Layered Ternary Sulfide

Abstract: BiTaS3, a new layered ternary sulfide, has been prepared from the elements. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the sulfide is indexed on the basis of pseudo-orthorhombic cell with the lattice parameters of a = 6.10 Å, b = 38.3 Å, and c = 23.115 Å.

“…The ( M S) 1+ x (TiS 2 ) 2 ( M = Bi, Sn, Pb) powders were prepared using a solid-liquid-vapor reaction method [16,17]. For each composition, the M , S, Ti powders were mixed in the molar ratio of 1:2:5 and then sealed in an evacuated silica tube.…”

“…10) We prepared a powdered raw material mixture of (SnS) 1.2 (TiS 2 ) 2 by first weighting titanium (Ti; 3N, 45¯m max), tin (Sn; 4N, 63¯m max) and sulfur (S; 4N, 75¯m max) powders (all from Kojundo Chemical Laboratory Co.) and then mixing them in a mortar under an argon atmosphere. We next packed 0.5 g portions of mixed powder into quartz tubes (OD: 10 mm; ID: 8 mm; length: 20 mm) and sealed them under a vacuum of 5 © 10 ¹2 Pa. Then, while applying a centrifugal acceleration of 18,000 g (g: standard acceleration of free fall) in their vertical direction of length, we first heated the tubes at 773 K for 2 h and next held them for 2 h at the maximum temperature of 9731,123 K, whereupon we allowed them to furnace cool.…”

“…16,17 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Both TiS 2 and (SnS) 1.2 (TiS 2 ) 2 were prepared using the solid-liquid-vapor reaction method. 18 For both TiS 2 and (SnS) 1.2 (TiS 2 ) 2 , the constituent elements were weighed and mixed according to the stoichiometric ratio. The mixed powder was sealed in an evacuated silica tube, which was subsequently fired in an electric furnace.…”
