Abstract: This prospective study sought to investigate the prediction of preoperative metabolic syndrome and its components for the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality by analyzing a subset of data from the ongoing Fujian prospective investigation of cancer (FIESTA) study. In total, 1,318 CRC patients who received radical resection were consecutively enrolled between January 2000 and December 2008. The median follow-up time was 58.6 months, with 412 deaths from CRC. The CRC patients with metabolic syndrome had sig… Show more

“…The FIESTA study initiated in January 2000 is an ongoing prospective cohort study of common digestive system tumors, including esophageal cancer, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer (Hu et al, 2016a, Peng et al, 2016, Hu et al, 2016b), and the purport of this study is to identify preoperative prognostic risk factors for cancer-specific mortality, which will help pinpoint underlying targets to delay tumor progression and prolong the survival of cancer patients after surgery. The conduct of this FIESTA study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Fujian Provincial Cancer Hospital and informed consent was obtained from all participants.…”

“…In the last recent decade, epidemiological and clinical studies have demonstrated a close link between MetS and an increased risk of CRC 5,6. However, the correlation between MetS and quantitative analysis of CRC outcome remained unclear 710. One possible explanation might be related to the inter-individual and time-related differences in host systemic inflammatory status, and the quantification of an elevated inflammatory response which is associated with the progression and prognosis of CRC 1113.…”

“…The FIESTA study started in January 2000, and it is an ongoing prospective cohort study of common digestive system tumors in China, including esophageal cancer, gastric cancer and colorectal cancer [16, 17]. The FIESTA study was designed to look for preoperative prognostic factors for cancer-specific mortality, aiming to help delay tumor progression and prolong the survival of cancer patients after the surgery.…”
