“…An examination of subjects' reactions to different possible surgery outcomes yielded similar results; few subjects anticipated that they would be fully satisfied with less than complete seizure elimination. Subjects' high expectations before surgery were similar to the optimistic and sometimes unrealistic attitudes that have been expressed by patients undergoing other types of medical procedures (23)(24)(25)(26). Our results suggest that patients and their significant others may prematurely place themselves in the successful-outcome group when told by their physicians of the success rates of epilepsy surgery, perhaps choosing to ignore the possibility that they may continue to experience seizures after surgery.…”
