Preoperative and Therapeutic Embolization of Extremities of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Abstract: Embolization of bone and soft tissue tumors has a broad range of indications, from curative treatment to palliation. The main purpose of embolization is to occlude as much of the tumor blood supply as possible. The outcome ranges from complete tumor devascularization and necrosis to degrees of ischemia and hypovascularity. Thus, the tumor will shrink, bleeding will be reduced, borders between the tumor and surrounding tissue will become clear, and resection will be easier. The purpose of this study was to corr… Show more

“…[20] Selective arterial embolization is a minimally invasive technique which has been widely used as an adjuvant treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors. [14,21] to reduce intraoperative and postoperative bleeding; nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, its use in PT surgery has never been described before.…”

“…Selective arterial embolization (SAE) has been widely used in bone and soft tissue sarcomas either as main treatment or neoadjuvant to surgery with excellent results, [12,13] in order to facilitate surgical procedures and reduce bleedings. [14][15][16] In this study, we aimed to investigate the significance of SAE as neoadjuvant for the treatment of PT associated with hip arthroplasty and present our case series including all the known bearing techniques.…”

“…[14][15][16] It reduces vascularity and intra-operative blood loss thereby allowing for better definition of tissue planes, and assisting in complete excision during surgery. The principles of TAE of bone tumours are the precise targeting of the occlusive embolic material to the tumour-feeding vessels.…”

“…Chemoembolization with intra-arterial methotrexate has been used to treat resistant osteosarcoma (Avritscher and Javadi 2011). Preoperative embolization has proven to be an effective therapy in giant cell tumors, aneurysmal bone cysts, osteoblastomas, chondrosarcomas and vertebral hemangiomas to reduce blood loss and decrease transfusion requirements (Jha et al 2016;Owen 2010;Pazionis et al 2014;Ibrahim et al 2013;Li et al 2008;Boztug et al 2006). Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are benign bone tumors of childhood and early adulthood presenting as expansile osteolytic lesions with a varying potential to be locally aggressive.…”
