Prenatal determinants of childhood obesity: a review of risk factors

Abstract: Childhood obesity is a predictor of adult obesity and has its roots in the pre-pregnancy or pregnancy period. This review presents an overview of the prenatal risk factors for childhood obesity, which were categorized into 2 groups: biological risk factors (maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain, diabetes in pregnancy, and caesarean section), and environmental and behavioural risk factors (maternal smoking and exposure to obesogens, maternal dietary patterns, maternal intestinal microb… Show more

“…Additionally, mindfulness may help lifestyles of mothers by promoting better health while decreasing stress. Stress has been found to lead to gestational diabetes and endocrine function over the life course for pregnant mothers, 16,17 which could affect the health and well-being of their children. Stress management and mindful parenting can play a crucial role in lowering levels of emotional distress among children.…”

“…Nitrate administration from water intake [55] and toxic doses of nitrosamine compounds may also result in diabetes via generation of some free radicals but it is unclear if dietary nitrate, nitrite, or nitrosamine exposure on human T1D could act in the same manner [56]. Many perinatal risk factors which are seen in childhood diabetes are also linked with T1DM [57] like maternalchild blood group incompatibility, pre-eclampsia, neonatal infections and respiratory distress, maternal age, gestational age, birth weight and order [58][59][60][61].…”

“…Lipid quality in early life may be particularly critical in individuals with an increased obesity risk due to their prenatal environment. Prenatal factors predisposing to later life obesity include maternal obesity, unbalanced diet, smoking, gestational diabetes, gestational weight gain and psychosocial stress (Liao et al, 2019). Nutritional quality of the early postnatal diet could (partially) alleviate detrimental effects of an adverse prenatal environment.…”
