Abstract: Background Social network sites (SNSs) have been defined as Web services that involve creating a private or semiprivate profile. Through these services, adolescents and adults can maintain and create new relationships. Adolescents, in particular, can be considered the main users of these sites as they spend a lot of time on SNSs. In using SNSs, individuals can exert greater control over the conversation and on the information shared, which is associated with a desire for self-presentation. Moreove… Show more

“…We observed that people who perceive themselves as extraverted, agreeable, and as having low levels of detachment prefer using SMSs to stay in touch with others and to seek information. These findings are in line with those of previous research (e.g., Horzum, 2016; Kircaburun et al., 2018; Mancinelli et al., 2019). On the other hand, users who use SMSs to pass time or search for companionship perceive themselves as having some maladaptive personality traits, such as high levels of antagonism, disinhibition, as well as low levels of consciousness.…”

“…Research addressing the relationship between the use of SMSs and personality traits has mainly considered the Five Factor Model (FFM; Costa & McCrae, 1985). In general, research has shown that extraverted and less conscientious individuals tend to make greater use of social media (Amichai-Hamburger & Vinitzky, 2010; Mancinelli et al., 2019). Some studies have reported that extraverted individuals use social media for the gratification of socializing and meeting new people, informational and educational fulfillment, and as a task management tool (Horzum, 2016; Kircaburun et al., 2018).…”

“…Due to their personality features, narcissistic individuals may be prone to engage in SNSs to gain the attention of others and reinforce their grandiose self-concept [ 18 ]. Moreover, some characteristics of SNSs, such as asynchronous communication and indirect feedback, allow users some degree of control over their self-presentation and communication with others [ 19 ], resulting in a sort of “narcissistic dream” (p. 308) [ 20 ].…”

“…However, as a result of the quarantine, children of all ages significantly increased their use of technology, although adolescents remained the most prolific users, followed by pre-adolescents and children. Moreover, females were more inclined to use SNSs, particularly TikTok and Instagram, compared to males, which is not surprising, considering that females use SNSs mainly for social purposes [ 30 ]. As regards the emotions experienced during the lockdown, a consistent trend emerged across the different age groups.…”
