BACKGROUND: Premarital sex increases the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections including HIV if unprotected and contraception is not used. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess premarital sex in the last twelve months and its predictors among regular undergraduate students of Wollega University. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey using pretested, structured questionnaire was conducted on a total of 704 regular undergraduate students of Wollega University from February to March, 2014. We used multistage sampling technique to recruit study participants. Binary and multivariable logistic regressions were performed using SPSS version 20 to assess predictors of premarital sex. Statistical significance was determined through a 95% confidence level. RESULTS: Wollega University youths who had premarital sex in the last twelve months were 28.4%; 55.5% of them did not use condom during last sex while 31.3% engaged in multiple sex. Being male .2(1.31-3.56)] were associated with increased odds of premarital sex in the last twelve months. CONCLUSION: Nearly one-third of regular undergraduate students of the university were engaged in premarital sex in the last twelve months. Being male, using social media frequently and alcohol use were associated with increased odds of premarital sex in the stated period. Thus, higher institutions have to deliver abstinence messages alongside information about self-protection.

Risks for STIs/HIV infection among Madawalabu University students, Southeast Ethiopia: a cross sectional study

IntroductionIn developing nations, the spread of STIs/HIV infection continues to affect millions of young and productive population. In Ethiopia youths including university/college students are at greater risk of STIs including HIV infection often due to many risky sexual behaviors. Although there are some anecdotal evidences suggesting widespread unsafe sexual practices among university students, the paucity of research finding, especially in newly established public universities are the major bottle necks to commence feasible interventions. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the magnitudes and factors associated with risks for STIs/HIV infections among Madawalabu university students in Southeast Ethiopia.MethodologyAn institution based cross sectional study was conducted from May-June 2012. A total of 390 students were selected using stratified then simple random sampling method. Descriptive statistics, binary logistic and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed to identify factors associated with risks for STIs/HIV infection.ResultCombined risk measure showed that 51.4% of students were at risk of having STIs and/or HIV infection. Practicing casual sex/sex for benefits with first sexual partner (OR = 3.9[95%C.I: 1.86-8.03]), life time multiple sexual partner (had more than three sexual partners) (OR = 2.7[95%C.I: 1.13-6.28]), and number of sexual partners in the last 12 months (four and above) (OR = 4.8[95%C.I: 1.77-13.53]) showed statistically significant association with risks for STIs and/or HIV infection. Practicing casual sex/ sex for any benefit with their first sexual partner (AOR = 3.9 [95%CI: 1.80-8.50]) and multiple sexual partners in the last 12 months (four and above) (AOR = 3.7 [95%C.I: 1.15-11.80]) were found to be the independent predictors of risks for STIs and/or HIV infection.ConclusionThis study has identified risks and risk sexual behaviors for STIs and/or HIV infection on university students. The knowledge of the students towards STIs and/or HIV is unsatisfactory. More than half of the students were at risk for STIs and/or HIV infection. Casual/benefit based sexual relationship with first sexual partner and having multiple sexual partners (≥4 sexual partners) in the last 12 months were independent predictors of STIs and/or HIV infections. Therefore, university based, risk reduction and behavior change focused interventions are recommended.

Sexual and reproductive health is at the base of people's living and wellbeing, the ability to develop in a supportive environment and grow into sexually responsive and responsible adults, the ability to enjoy one's sexuality without harming or damaging oneself or one's partner, are among the unique attributes that define us as human. Many of the typical changes that occur during adolescence tend to interfere with the effectiveness and amount of interaction between parent and child. The objective of the study is to assess communication on sexual and reproductive health issues among Mizan secondary and preparatory school students with parents. Institution based cross sectional quantitative study design was conducted among Mizan secondary and preparatory school students with sample size of 356 and total population of 3436 from April, 20/4/2016 to April, 25/4/2016. The data was collected by using structured self-administered questionnaires. After the data was collected it was processed and analyzed manually by the help scientific calculator. The response rate was 100%. From the total of three hundred fifty six respondents 196(55.1%) of them were females. One hundred three 103(28.9%) of respondents were discussed at least one SRH issue with parents for the last 12 month of the study period, from those 58(56.3%) of them were females and 45(43.7%) of them were males. but majority 253(71.1%) of them didn't discussed about SRH issues with their parents. This study shows that student-parent communication on SRH issues is low, only less than one-third of the students were communication SRH. The risk for SRH problems need urgent and continues intervention as such it is necessary to equip and educate parents and students on different sexual and reproductive health issues. Therefore; there should be give school base sex education about SRH and youth friendly health service for youth and adolescents at different level of health care.
