“…Anxiety about aging not only mediated the association between knowledge and ageism, but also mediated the association between attitudes and behaviors toward older adults (Allan and Johnson, 2008;Lasher and Faulkender, 1993). Eshbaugh et al found that college undergraduates who reported less aging anxiety were more likely to indicate a likelihood of working with older adults in the future (Eshbaugh et al, 2010). This coincides with the results of our study.…”

“…This is similar to findings from previous studies. It is reported that previous contact with older adults was significantly associated with students' self-efficacy and interest in working with them (Eshbaugh et al, 2010;Gonc¸alves et al, 2011;Lee et al, 2007). The following might be some reasons for this: (1) living with older family members in one house can promote student nurses' correct understanding of older adults and stimulate student nurses' caring and compassionate for the elderly (Pan et al, 2009); (2) student nurses' interactions with older adults may positively influence their attitudes toward older adults (Gonc¸alves et al, 2011;Wang et al, 2009a); and (3) interacting with older adults can reduce student nurses' anxiety about aging (Yan et al, 2011).…”

“…Despite these models for successful aging, ageism persists and can facilitate discriminatory behavior, even in healthcare settings; ageism's effects can delay or prevent the provision of quality care (Allan & Johnson, 2009;Cherry & Palmore, 2008;Eshbaugh et al, 2010;Ferrario et al, 2008;Rupp et al, 2005). Given the influence of ageism on healthcare, the current study investigated the predictive significance of knowledge of aging, aging anxiety, contact with older adults, and compassion with ageism in undergraduates' training for careers in medical and psychological healthcare.…”

“…Unfortunately, older adults may encounter ageist attitudes from the providers whose care they seek (Ferrario, Freeman, Nellett, & Scheel, 2008). These ageist attitudes can shape the type and quality of care that is provided to older adults; such beliefs can delay or prevent treatments that would otherwise provide relief (Eshbaugh, Gross, & Satrom, 2010;Stewart et al, 2005). Haight, Christ, and Dias (1994, p. 382) contend that ''ageism is alive and well'' in providers; other researchers also support this claim that healthcare providers may possess negative attitudes toward older adults (Duerson, Thomas, Chang, & Stevens 1992;Reyna et al, 2007;Scharlach, Damron-Rodriguez, Robinson, & Feldman, 2000).…”
