Predictive multi-channel flux-driven modelling to optimise ICRH tungsten control and fusion performance in JET

Abstract: The evolution of the JET high performance hybrid scenario, including central accumulation of the tungsten (W) impurity, is reproduced with predictive multi-channel integrated modelling over multiple confinement times using first-principle based core transport models. 8 transport channels (𝑇 𝑖 , 𝑇 𝑒 , 𝑗, 𝑛 𝐷 , 𝑛 𝐡𝑒 , 𝑛 𝑁𝑖 , 𝑛 π‘Š , πœ”) are modelled predictively, with self-consistent sources, radiation and magnetic equilibrium, yielding a system with multiple non-linearities: This system can reprodu… Show more

“…The normalized logarithmic ion temperature gradient passed to QuaLiKiz, R/L Ti , is multiplied by the ratio of the local thermal energy density over the local total energy density, W th /W tot . This simple ad-hoc model has been shown to consistently improve ITG predictions in high-Ξ², high performance hybrid scenarios [51]. This ad hoc model, due to the large fraction of fast-ion pressure (∼ 25% in the D-beam heated pulses), also has a strong impact on the profiles for our cases.…”

“…These results provide confidence in predictive QuaLiKiz modelling in multi-isotope regimes, and extend the predictions to different machines or regimes, including the JET DT campaign. For example, this validation increases the confidence on the multipleisotope behaviour for the full-power DT extrapolation performed in [51,53].…”

“…To overcome the problem that the gas fuelling rate is not an optimal parameter to use, a third scaling law has been determined by replacing Ξ“D2 with ne sep /ne ped . Unfortunately, ne sep cannot be directly used because it is strongly correlated with the plasma current (see later, in expression 14). ne sep /ne ped is not an engineering parameter, but it might be estimated with SOL transport modelling.…”

“…The number of experimental data that are predicted correctly within Β±20% increases from 64% to 69%, but the R 2 is reduced from 0.70 to 0.61 (see table 2). In expression (14) the fuelling rate has been replaced with the ratio ne sep /ne GW ,…”
