Predictive Factors of Failure in a Fixed 15 mCi 131I-Iodide Therapy for Graves’ Disease

Abstract: Our study has shown that a fixed 15 mCi approach for treatment of Graves' disease was effective, but high failure rates were observed in patients presenting larger goiters, particularly those with estimated thyroid mass >62 g.

“…Markovic et al used statistical analyses to prove that the chances of recovery are much higher for the patients whose thyroids are smaller than 62 g (only 9.6% of unsuccessful attempts) as opposed to persons with thyroids larger than 62 g (as many as 44% of cases of persistent hyperthyroidism) [14]. Our research has also proven that the volume of the thyroid gland has a significant (P < 0.002) bearing on the success of treatment.…”

“…9 Radioactive iodine has been used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism for over 60 years. 6 In the literature, there are limited numbers of studies evaluating the effects of RAI ablation therapy on the lacrimal glands. To the best of our knowledge, there is no study that evaluates tear in patients undergoing RAI treatment of hyperthyroidism.…”

“…A fixed 555-MBq (15 mCi) RAI treatment was given via oral route in patients with Graves disease, whereas a 925-MBq (25 mCi) RAI treatment was given in patients with toxic adenoma. 6,7 In addition, patients were prescribed a diet with low iodine content 10 days before the therapy, and antithyroid medications were withdrawn 7 days before the therapy. 1,7 In all patients, ophthalmological examination, Schirmer test, TBUT test, and ocular surface examination were performed before and at 3 and 6 months after RAI treatment, and results were prospectively evaluated.…”
