“…The results of our research correlate with the majority of studies that claim that OPs represent the most sensitive electroretinographic indicator in diabetic eye disease [12][13][14][15][16], demonstrating an early impairment of neuronal synaptic activity of amacrine and horizontal retinal cells.…”

“…Our results also showed that the photopic flicker ERG of our diabetic P . obesus was reduced in amplitude and delayed in timing, similar to what was previously reported in human diabetes [ 56 , 72 , 73 ]. Similar timing delays have been reported for other vascular retinopathy such as central and branch retinal vein occlusions [ 1 ].…”

“…We hypothesized that controlling systemic glycemia with metformin could recover HFD-induced retinal dysfunction. As seen in human patients, where ERG OPs are more sensitive to diabetic stress, 41,42 we observed that 1 month after HFD regimen, the HFD mice had decreased OPs and delayed OP implicit times, even though these HFD mice had not yet developed systemic hyperglycemia. These data indicate that retinal function may be compromised under prediabetic conditions, preceding systemic hyperglycemia.…”
