Predicting behavior problems in deaf and hearing children: The influences of language, attention, and parent–child communication

Abstract: The development of language and communication may play an important role in the emergence of behavioral problems in young children, but they are rarely included in predictive models of behavioral development. In this study, cross-sectional relationships between language, attention, and behavior problems were examined using parent report, videotaped observations, and performance measures in a sample of 116 severely and profoundly deaf and 69 normally hearing children ages 1.5 to 5 years. Secondary analyses were… Show more

“…Communication difficulties have been consistently identified as a key mechanism linking hearing loss and mental health problems [2,6,8,10]. We controlled for speech and language problems in our analyses, and this may be a key reason why there was no association between hearing problems and mental health problems among the 4-11 year olds once we controlled for this factor, among others.…”

“…Although, as we pointed out before, the use of the inadequate communicative strategies in the family environment is related with behavior problems in children, this situation is even worse when there is a disability affecting them directly , as it occurs in children with hearing impairment (Barker, Quittner, Fink, Eisenberg, Tobey & Niparko, 2009;Van Eldik, Treffers, Veerman & Verhulst, 2004).…”

“…At this young age, language skill deficits in the PCHL children were not related to high EBD score. However, after the age of 3 years, language abilities in deaf children have been found to be closely related to their social functioning and behaviour (Barker, Quittner, Fink, Tobey, & Niparko, 2009; Meinzen‐Derr et al., 2014). The same association between language ability and behaviour difficulty, specifically peer relationship problems, has also been found in deaf adolescents (Fellinger, Holzinger, Beitel, Laucht, & Goldberg, 2009).…”
