Abstract: We investigated the precursor wave emission efficiency in magnetized purely perpendicular relativistic shocks in pair plasmas. We extended our previous study to include the dependence of upstream magnetic field orientations. We performed two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and focused on two magnetic field orientations: the magnetic field to be in the simulation plane (i.e., in-plane configuration) and perpendicular to the simulation plane (i.e., out-of-plane configuration). Our simulations in the in-… Show more

“…Larmor rotation of charges entering the shock and gyrating around the ordered magnetic field creates the necessary population inversion in the form of an unstable ring-like particle distribution function, which relaxes by transferring energy into an outwardly propagating coherent electromagnetic wave (e.g. Gallant et al 1992;Hoshino et al 1992;Amato & Arons 2006;Hoshino 2008;Sironi & Spitkovsky 2009Iwamoto et al 2017Iwamoto et al , 2018Plotnikov & Sironi 2019).…”

“…The inhomogeneity will reduce the coherence of the ring-like distribution and also the growth rate. Despite the reduction in the emission efficiency, the emitted power in 2D has yet remained strong enough to drive relativistic transverse motions of electrons [14,15].…”

“…Weibel instability converts the anisotropy of plasma temperature into a magnetic field (Weibel 1959;Fried 1959), and is considered as an origin of magnetic field in various phenomena. In particular, it is expected that magnetic field turbulence resulting from relativistic Weibel instability is responsible for the relativistic collisionless shock formation (Kato & Takabe 2008;Spitkovsky 2008), which is one of the most probable candidates for accelerating the ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays (Hillas 1984) through diffusive shock acceleration (Kirk & Duffy 1999;Achterberg et al 2001) and wake field acceleration (Tajima & Dawson 1979;Hoshino 2008;Iwamoto et al 2017Iwamoto et al , 2018. And Weibel instability is also regarded as providing the necessary magnetic field to explain the observed afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (Nousek et al 2006).…”
