Preclinical hematological profile studies of an ayurvedic medicine Siddha Makardhwaja after chronic administration to male sprague-dawley rats

Abstract: Background: Siddha Makardhwaja (SMD) is a classical Ayurvedic formulation markedly used as a traditional medicine in the rural population for various purposes such as stimulant, tonic, and rejuvenator. Methods: The present study is conducted to evaluate the effect of conventionally prepared SMD on the hematological parameters in experimental animals, for providing scientific data base for its logical use in clinical practice. Acute toxicity tests were conducted to determine the LD50 of the drug. To find out the… Show more

“…The neutrophil increase can occur due to several mechanisms, such as a shift from marginating to circulating pool, increased release from bone marrow, increased production by the bone marrow, and decreased migration into tissue. Neutrophils too high, known as neutrophilia, 29 may cause acute bacterial infections, inflammation, and tissue death. Low lymphocyte concentration is associated with increased infection rates after surgery or trauma.…”

“…Low lymphocyte concentration is associated with increased infection rates after surgery or trauma. Lymphocytes too low, known as lymphocytopenia 29 may cause autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and bone marrow damage. The value of Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) highly significantly decreased (<p=.01) in low dose and very highly significantly decreased (<p=.001) in high dose to the VGS treated rats in our study (Table 3).…”

“…The possible toxicity of certain chemicals is identified and also proper guidelines are provided for their safe usage from drug safety profile. [34][35][36][37] Like any other type of treatment, ayurvedic medicine has the potential for harm if not used properly. It is reported from a study that heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, and chromium were present in the majority of Ayurvedic formulations.…”
