Parotidectomy and neck dissection in the management of conjunctival melanoma: Are they necessary?

“…They concluded that although there was no clear indication for or against prophylactic lymph node dissection, patients with frank regional lymph node metastases should undergo regional lymphadenectomy, which consisted of parotidectomy and neck dissection. Others have recommended elective radical neck dissections for primary treatment of malignant melanoma 24, 25. Some have also advocated external beam radiation therapy to the site of the regional lymph metastasis in addition to the ipsilateral neck after surgical resection of CMM 8…”

Reese (1938) labelled non-nevoid melanocytic proliferation of the conjunctival epithelium 'precancerous melanosis'. The designation underlined the likelihood for malignancy to supervene and exenterations were sometimes peformed for obviously benign lesions.…”
