Pre-clinical anti-inflammatory aspects of a cuisine and medicinal millennial herb: Malva sylvestris L.

Abstract: Malva sylvestris has been used since ancient times for its emollient, laxative and anti-inflammatory properties, being extensively used as salads, soups and teas. The preset study evaluated the topical anti-inflammatory action of M. sylvestris hydroalcoholic extract (HE) and its compounds in mice ear inflammation caused by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-acetate in mice. The LC-MS analysis of the HE confirmed the presence of scopoletin, quercetin and malvidin 3-glucoside compounds in the HE of M. sylvestris. Topical… Show more

“…The role of the aqueous extract from M. sylvestris aerial parts was assessed in rat models with induced inflammation (Sleiman & Daher, 2009). Later, it was confirmed that malvidin 3-glucoside appears to be the main responsible bioactive compound for the antiinflammatory effect (Prudente et al, 2013 (Ameri et al, 2016). Also, at the same time, a pronounced improvement in quality of life in HNC patients with radiation-induced xerostomia was observed (Heydarirad et al, 2017).…”

“…The role of the aqueous extract from M. sylvestris aerial parts was assessed in rat models with induced inflammation (Sleiman & Daher, ). Later, it was confirmed that malvidin 3‐glucoside appears to be the main responsible bioactive compound for the antiinflammatory effect (Prudente et al, ). Also, Martins et al suggested that M. sylvestris extracts antiinflammatory effects seem to be related to special antiinflammatory mediators induction—prostaglandins PGE 2 and PGD 2 (Martins et al, ).…”

“…Further cells have been challenged with the known reference bioactive follistatin, a well-documented protein antagonist of myostatin and that stimulates myogenesis, used here as a positive control (Li et al 2007;Zhao and Hoffman 2008), and with a nutraceutical form of crude Malva sylvestris leaf extracts, our unknown in this study, that has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties previously (Pirbalouti et al 2010;Prudente et al 2013).…”

“…Recently, it has also been reported that the extract of Malva sylvestris has wound-healing potential in alloxan-induced diabetic rats (Pirbalouti et al, 2010(Pirbalouti et al, , 2012. The extract of Malva sylvestris also has antiinflammatory and antiulcerogenic properties (Conforti et al, 2008;Sleiman and Daher, 2009;Pirbalouti et al, 2010;Gasparetto et al, 2012;Prudente et al, 2013).…”
