Power quality improvement in smart grids using electric vehicles: a review

Abstract: The global warming problem together with the environmental issues has already pushed the governments to replace the conventional fossil-fuel vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) having less emission. This replacement has led to adding a huge number of EVs with the capability of connecting to the grid. It is noted that the presence of such vehicles may introduce several challenges to the electrical grid due to their grid-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-grid capabilities. In between, the power quality issues would be… Show more

“…These various types of EMSs become essential components of the whole smart city [173]. Specifically, from the viewpoint of future popularization and controllability, EVs are expected to be used for power system operation including the Vehicle to Grid (V2G) scheme [174][175][176][177][178][179][180][181][182].…”

“…It is important to note that the origin of the problems caused by the chargers is also part of the solution. The power electronic converters, which act as the interface between the grid and the batteries, have the potential to behave in an active way, by providing various active functions or ancillary services to support the power system operation, such as frequency control, voltage control [11], operating reserve, controllable load, and Power Quality (PQ) improvement [12]. This is in the context of what is often referred to as the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept.…”

“…Higher penetration of EVs in smart grids along with largescale utilization of multi-functional EV chargers in the near future enables new potentials to be harnessed in service restoration [22], [23]. References [23]- [30] have investigated integration of EVs in distribution grids and the potential ancillary services such as Volt-VAR optimization and outage management by Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) services.…”
